Dr. John Bruce Bonneau, son of William Henry Bonneau and Anna Maria Swinton, was born on June 8, 1831 in Charleston, South Carolina. While he was still a young lad, he moved to Lowndes County, Alabama. John married Martha Lavina Garrett on August 1, 1861 in Lowndes County, Alabama. It was from Lowndes County that John joined the Confederate Army. Early in the Conflict, John Bruce enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Lowndes County on April 26, 1862. He served in Company D of the 10th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry. One record states that he was detailed as Hospital Steward and Regimental Surgeon. He received his parole in June 1865 at Montgomery, Alabama. After the War, John and Martha settled down to family life. They were the parents of eight children, four of which were born in Alabama. The children were Mary Augusta, Esther Maybank, Silas Garrett, William Henry, Richard Vanderhorst, Rebecca Adaline, John Bruce, and Anna Maria. Sometime between 1870 and 1873, John Bruce moved his family to Texas. They settled in Millsap, Texas where they lived the remainder of their lives. Martha Lavina Died March 18, 1911 and John Bruce died July 28, 1913. They are buried in Fairview Cemetery near the town of Mllsap, Texas.
