James married Nellie May Eagle on December 28, 1902 in Daviess County, Indiana. Together, he and Nellie had two children, William and George.

After the death of his first wife, Nellie, James married Olive Mae Clark on Sunday, October 6, 1912 in Daviess County, Indiana, at the home of minister, Rev. J. W. Gilley, in Plainville. Together, James and Ollie had six children, Roscoe, Hazel, Charles, Lester, Dorothy, and Clifford.

Per his Death Certificate, James died from complications following an operation on March 25 for gastric resection for chronic duodenal obstruction due to a duodenal ulcer. He was a retired farmer.

Daviess County Ex-Commissioner Dies in Louisville

Washington, Ind., April 4 -- James L. Bateman, 72, retired farmer and a former Daviess County commissioner, died in Norton Memorial Infirmary, Louisville, today after a three-week illness. He was commissioner from 1934 to 1948 and was a member of First Christian Church and Eagles Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Olive; seven sons, William, Charles, C. J., and Clifford Bateman, all of Washington; the Rev. G. R. Bateman, English; Paul Bateman, Connersville, and J. O. Bateman, Albany, Cal., and two daughters, Mrs. Ray Simmons, Napa, Cal., and Mrs. Gerald Jerrell, Washington.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The body is at V. L. Poindexter Funeral Home.
