All of the children born to John Armstrong and Mary E. (Coy) Armstrong through, at least, William C. (or G) Armstrong are believed to have been born in or near the village of Dresden, which is found in Jefferson and Cass townships in Muskingum County, Ohio. Sometime between 1843/44 and the 1850 census, the Armstrong family moved to Coshocton County, Ohio. This is the Armstrong family as it appears in the 1850 census of Franklin Township, Coshocton County, Ohio;
John Armstrong M 34 Ohio
Mary E Armstrong F 31 New York
James G Armstrong M 13 Ohio
George E Armstrong M 11 Ohio
Rachel Armstrong F 9 Ohio
William C Armstrong M 7 Ohio
Harriet Armstrong F 5 Ohio
Elisabeth Armstrong F 3 Ohio
John F Armstrong M 2 Ohio
Henry Armstrong M 1 Ohio

George E. Armstrong and Barbara J. Rodebush were married on May 3, 1860 in Coshocton County. Barbara was very likely pregnant at the time they got married as they are believed to have had a daughter named Rachel Armstrong by the time the 1860 census was taken. At the time of the 1860 census, this is the way the family appears in Franklin Township, Coshocton County, Ohio;
Family #884
George Armstrong 21 Ohio
Barbary Armstrong 20 Ohio
Rachel Armstrong 0 Ohio
Family #904
John Armstrong 44 Ohio
Mary Armstrong 41 Ohio
James G Armstrong 22 Ohio
William C. Armstrong 18 Ohio
Henry Armstrong 11 Ohio
Mariah Armstrong 8 Ohio
Eliza Armstrong 6 Ohio
Jane Armstrong 5 Ohio
Reuben Armstrong 2 Ohio

As stated above, Rachel (Armstrong) Rodebush and her husband, George Washington Rodebush moved west to Illinois in the late 1850's, shortly after they were married. The Armstrong family followed them to Illinois after the 1860 census was taken, sometime between 1860 and the spring of 1862, where they settled in Woodford County. By 1862, George and at least two of his brothers are definately residents in Olio Township of Woodford County. In 1862, the three Armstrong brothers volunteered to serve in what was to become Co. A of the 86th Illinois. None of the brothers would survive the war.
If the Armstrong family did come as a unit to Woodford County, they did not remain long as at the time of the 1870 census, the Armstrong family is found in Clay Township, Sullivan County, Missouri.

Carol Dorward, told me that "at some time, they apparently moved to Iowa as I think I found John and Mary in Iowa in 1880. I did find two family records and they have both John and Mary deceased about 1885 in Iowa." Some people believe that this is them. I do not. In the 1900 census, Mary is born in Kentucky, has had only five children, all of whom are living and she and John are listed as having been married just 26 years. None of this would be correct.
This is what is found on them;
John and Mary may be the John and Mary we find in Allen, Warren County, Iowa in the 1880 census. His parents according to this census were born in Virginia;
John Armstrong Self M 62 Ohio, United States
Mary Armstrong Wife F 63 Kentucky, United States
Mary Sumter Granddaughter F 8 Iowa, United States
Chester Sumter Granddaughter F 6 Iowa, United States
Effie L Sumter Granddaughter F 4 Iowa, United States

This same John and Mary are found in Allen Township, Carlisle town, Warren County, Iowa in the 1900 census. His parents are now listed as having been born in West Virginia;
Baston M Kimes Head M 62 Iowa
Eliza Kimes Wife F 43 Iowa
Baston M Kimes Son M 15 Iowa
Eugene L Kimes Son M 11 Iowa
Jessie E Kimes Son M 9 Iowa
Frank L Kimes Son M 5 Iowa
Emma M Kimes Daughter F 3 Iowa
Wm A Sumpter Stepson M 21 Illinois
Lucie M Sumpter Stepdaughter F 17 Iowa
John Armstrong Father-in-law M 82 Ohio
Marry Armstrong Mother-in-law F 83 Kentucky

I do not believe this to be the correct John and Mary E. (Coy) Armstrong. It is hoped that some family member who knows where they are buried and will contact me.

Now to continue with the biography of George E. Armstrong;
As stated above, George E. Armstrong and Barbara J. Rodebush were married on May 3, 1860 in Coshocton County. Just a couple years before, George's sister Rachel, was married to Barbara's brother, George Washington Rodebush. Barbara J. (Rodebush) Armstrong is known to have had a daughter, Rachel Armstrong, by the time the 1860 census was taken. Shortly after this census was taken, the Armstrongs came to Illinois, settling near Eureka, Illinois in Olio Township of Woodford County. It now appears that when the Armstrongs made this move that Barbara and Rachel stayed behind or at the very least returned to Ohio by 1863 after George's death. However, when George E. Armstrong enlisted in the service, he is recorded as being single. Perhaps he was just divorced and considered himself single or perhaps this was just an error. In any case following is information about the Rachel Armstrong that we believe to be Barbara's daughter.
1. Rachel Ella Armstrong was born c. 1859/60 in Coshocton County, Ohio. Was Rachel named after George's sister, Rachel, who was married to Barbara's brother, George Washington Rodebush? It is now believed that Rachel's parents, both George and Barbara, may have been deceased by the time of the 1870 census. In the 1870 census, there is a Rachel E Armstrong in the household of a Thomas and Margaret Armstrong in Goshen Township, Hardin County, Ohio;
Thomas Armstrong M 66 Pennsylvania
Margaret Armstrong F 60 Pennsylvania
Willie McQuown M 14 Ohio
Rachel E Armstrong F 9 Ohio

Rachel Ella Armstrong was married to Harry Kelley Latham and they had two children;
A. Nita Latham, born April __, 1886 in Ohio. At the time of the 1900 census, Nita is found living with her father and step mother in the village of Patterson, Ohio in Hardin County. Nita was married to ___________ ___________ in 19__.

B. Ray L Latham, born January 26, 1888 in Grand, Marion County, Ohio. Ray is found living with his father and step mother in the village of Patterson, Ohio in Hardin County at the time of the 1900 census. Ray was married to ___________ ___________ in 1900. They were the parents of;
a. __________ Latham

b. __________ Latham.

Ray Latham is Peter Tennis' grandfather on his mother's side.

Rachel E. (Armstrong) Latham died in 1890. The mortal remains of Rachel Latham, who was born c. 1861 and who died on 7 Apr 1890 were laid to rest in the Good Hope Cemetery in Wyandot County, Ohio. Her Find A Grave Memorial is #134576011. She is listed as the wife of H. K. Latham.

Harry K. Latham was married 2nd to ____________ "Kate" _____________ before 1900. The Lathams are found in the village of Patterson, Jackson Township, Hardin County, Ohio at the time of the 1900 census;
Harry K Latham Head M Oct 1862 38 Ohio
Kate Latham Wife F Feb 1871 29 Ohio
Nita Latham Daughter F Apr 1886 14 Ohio
Ray Latham Son M Dec 1887 13 Ohio
Leroy Latham Son M Jun 1895 5 Ohio
Irvin Latham Son M Mar 1897 3 Ohio

At the time of the 1910 census, Harry and his family are found in Jackson Township, Hardin County, Ohio;
Harry K Latham Head M 48 Ohio
Kate H Latham Wife F 39 Ohio
Leroy M Latham Son M 15 Iowa
Irvin D Latham Son M 13 Ohio
Frank C Latham Son M 9 Ohio
Mary Latham Daughter F 7 Ohio
Margery D Latham Daughter F 4 Ohio
Maude Latham Daughter F 1 Ohio

Now to continue with what we know about George E. Armstrong, his service and his family;
On August 7, 1862, George E. Armstrong, went into Eureka, Illinois,where he volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in the Eureka/El Paso area of Woodford County by William S. Magarity for service in the Civil War. That same day, perhaps they even went into Eureka together, George Washington Rodebush, also went into Eureka and volunteered to serve in the same Eureka/El Paso company. At the time he enlisted, George E. Armstrong is recorded as being 23 years of age and single, which is strange, because we know he was married just two years before. Perhaps George and Barbara were no longer married, or perhaps she did not want to move to Illinois and she chose to stay behind and she and George were just living apart for the time being. Perhaps there was a family member that couldn't move and she chose to stay behind with them. Also, there are many errors in these records as well, so perhaps the single is just an error. Whatever the case is, George and Barbara (Rodebush) Armstrong were apparently not living together at the time.
The following day, August 8, 1862, George's two brothers, James C. and William G. also volunteered.

When Magarity had about 100 volunteers, he took his company across the river to Peoria, Illinois, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. There on August 27, 1862, 96 of Magarity's volunteers, including all three of the Armstrong brothers, were mustered into service as Co. A of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The men of the 86th Illinois participated in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky after which they moved south to Nashville, Tennessee, arriving there on Nov. 7, 1862, where the 86th would begin a long period of garrison duty.
However, within days of their arrival in Nashville, all three of the Armstrong boys were ill and sent to the hospital. James died in a Nashville Hospital on Nov. 18, 1862, William died in a Nashville Hospital on Nov. 30, 1862, and Pvt. George E. Armstrong died in a Nashville Hospital on Dec. 27, 1862. George Washington Rodebush survived the war and most likely saw all three of his brother-in-laws buried.
Today the earthly remains of the three Armstrong brothers lie buried in the Nashville National Cemetery, James in grave #5873, Section B; William is most likely buried in a grave marked as UNKNOWN U. S. SOLDIER possibly in Section B; and George in grave #5852 in Section B.

What happened to Barbara (Rodebush) Armstrong is not known for certain at this time. It is hoped that some family member with this knowledge will see this and contact me. However, there is a record of a Barbara Armstrong, who is apparently listed as being 26 years of age, being married to a David Corbin in Licking County, Ohio in ____________ __, 1863. If this is our Barbara, she would have been widowed by this time. This would place her year of birth about 1836, which would be a little old for our Barbara (Rodebush) Armstrong, but as we all know, ages and years of birth have to be taken with a grain of salt.
Strangely, there is a Barbara Corbin found dying in 1870 in Knox County, Illinois. She is listed as having been born in Ohio, as being 36 years of age and married. This would place her year of birth c. 1834, a little older yet than what our Barbara should be listed at. Again, taken with a grain of salt. This Barbara Corbin is listed as having been a resident of Persifer Township, Knox County, Illinois.
Remember, Barbara's brother, George Washington Rodebush, who was married to Barbara's husband's sister, Rachel Armstrong, moved to Illinois when the Armstrong family made the move to Illinois and he and his family remained in central Illinois until c. 1867/68. Perhaps David and Barbara followed them to Illinois after they were married in 1863?

Still lots of questions?????

(Baxter would enjoy hearing from anyone, especially descendants of the Armstrong family, who might be able to add to the biographical material that we have on Private George E. Armstrong and the Armstrong family. Baxter would also love to see copies of any pictures of George E. Armstrong which may have survived the years added to his Find A Grave site for all to see.)

All of the children born to John Armstrong and Mary E. (Coy) Armstrong through, at least, William C. (or G) Armstrong are believed to have been born in or near the village of Dresden, which is found in Jefferson and Cass townships in Muskingum County, Ohio. Sometime between 1843/44 and the 1850 census, the Armstrong family moved to Coshocton County, Ohio. This is the Armstrong family as it appears in the 1850 census of Franklin Township, Coshocton County, Ohio;
John Armstrong M 34 Ohio
Mary E Armstrong F 31 New York
James G Armstrong M 13 Ohio
George E Armstrong M 11 Ohio
Rachel Armstrong F 9 Ohio
William C Armstrong M 7 Ohio
Harriet Armstrong F 5 Ohio
Elisabeth Armstrong F 3 Ohio
John F Armstrong M 2 Ohio
Henry Armstrong M 1 Ohio

George E. Armstrong and Barbara J. Rodebush were married on May 3, 1860 in Coshocton County. Barbara was very likely pregnant at the time they got married as they are believed to have had a daughter named Rachel Armstrong by the time the 1860 census was taken. At the time of the 1860 census, this is the way the family appears in Franklin Township, Coshocton County, Ohio;

This is what is found on them;
John and Mary may be the John and Mary we find in Allen, Warren County, Iowa in the 1880 census. His parents according to this census were born in Virginia;
John Armstrong Self M 62 Ohio, United States
Mary Armstrong Wife F 63 Kentucky, United States
Mary Sumter Granddaughter F 8 Iowa, United States
Chester Sumter Granddaughter F 6 Iowa, United States
Effie L Sumter Granddaughter F 4 Iowa, United States

This same John and Mary are found in Allen Township, Carlisle town, Warren County, Iowa in the 1900 census. His parents are now listed as having been born in West Virginia;
Baston M Kimes Head M 62 Iowa
Eliza Kimes Wife F 43 Iowa
Baston M Kimes Son M 15 Iowa
Eugene L Kimes Son M 11 Iowa
Jessie E Kimes Son M 9 Iowa
Frank L Kimes Son M 5 Iowa
Emma M Kimes Daughter F 3 Iowa
Wm A Sumpter Stepson M 21 Illinois
Lucie M Sumpter Stepdaughter F 17 Iowa
John Armstrong Father-in-law M 82 Ohio
Marry Armstrong Mother-in-law F 83 Kentucky

I do not believe this to be the correct John and Mary E. (Coy) Armstrong. It is hoped that some family member who knows where they are buried and will contact me.

Now to continue with the biography of George E. Armstrong;
1. Rachel Ella Armstrong was born c. 1859/60 in Coshocton County, Ohio. Was Rachel named after George's sister, Rachel, who was married to Barbara's brother, George Washington Rodebush? It is now believed that Rachel's parents, both George and Barbara, may have been deceased by the time of the 1870 census. In the 1870 census, there is a Rachel E Armstrong in the household of a Thomas and Margaret Armstrong in Goshen Township, Hardin County, Ohio;
Thomas Armstrong M 66 Pennsylvania
Margaret Armstrong F 60 Pennsylvania
Willie McQuown M 14 Ohio
Rachel E Armstrong F 9 Ohio

Rachel Ella Armstrong was married to Harry Kelley Latham and they had two children;
A. Nita Latham, born April __, 1886 in Ohio. At the time of the 1900 census, Nita is found living with her father and step mother in the village of Patterson, Ohio in Hardin County. Nita was married to ___________ ___________ in 19__.

B. Ray L Latham, born January 26, 1888 in Grand, Marion County, Ohio. Ray is found living with his father and step mother in the village of Patterson, Ohio in Hardin County at the time of the 1900 census. Ray was married to ___________ ___________ in 1900. They were the parents of;

K. Latham.

Harry K. Latham was married 2nd to ____________ "Kate" _____________ before 1900. The Lathams are found in the village of Patterson, Jackson Township, Hardin County, Ohio at the time of the 1900 census;
Harry K Latham Head M Oct 1862 38 Ohio
Kate Latham Wife F Feb 1871 29 Ohio
Nita Latham Daughter F Apr 1886 14 Ohio
Ray Latham Son M Dec 1887 13 Ohio
Leroy Latham Son M Jun 1895 5 Ohio
Irvin Latham Son M Mar 1897 3 Ohio

At the time of the 1910 census, Harry and his family are found in Jackson Township, Hardin County, Ohio;
Harry K Latham Head M 48 Ohio
Kate H Latham Wife F 39 Ohio
Leroy M Latham Son M 15 Iowa
Irvin D Latham Son M 13 Ohio
Frank C Latham Son M 9 Ohio
Mary Latham Daughter F 7 Ohio
Margery D Latham Daughter F 4 Ohio
Maude Latham Daughter F 1 Ohio

Now to continue with what we know about George E. Armstrong, his service and his family;

Still lots of questions?????

by Baxter B. Fite III, who can be contacted at [email protected], Carol Dorward, of Washington, Illinois, and Peter Tennis, a great greatgrandson of George E. Armstrong. Peter's email address is [email protected]
