US Congressman, Journalist. He was the publisher and editor of the "New York Times" for many years. He served as Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1855 to 1856, and was elected as a Republican to represent New York's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1865 to March 3, 1867.
