Raised in Lima, NY, James served in the Civil War. As brother of politically influential Lincoln supporter in New York and major journalist, James found a position for a short time in the New York state government, then decided to look at the expanding western states for his future. After marrying in Washington, he couple moved to Minnesota where he was an active insurance broker. This couple had no children.

"JAMES F. RAYMOND, 81 years old, died Saturday at his residence, 2017 Fifth Avenue S. Mr. Raymond was the youngest brother of Henry J.[Jarvis] Raymond,founder of the New York Times, and had been a resident of Minneapolis for thirty years. He was leader of the band in the Fifth Corps of Wadsworth's Division of the Army of the Potomac. The funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow at 2 p.m."
