Laura Elizabeth Porter was born in 1871. Her mother died soon after and Laura was sent to live with the Winship family in Rush County Indiana. She married Luther Caldwell. They had one daughter. According to family legend, Laura had told Luther that she would never be a farmer's wife. When Luther moved back to the family farm to help his mother, Laura took their daughter May, and disguised her as a boy, and ran away to Hagerstown, MD, to live near her sister, Kate Porter Mathews. Laura was married a second time to William J. Krouse in Washington, DC.
