Mr. Otto Allen, 84, of 2224 E. U.S. 35 and U.S. 6, Hamlet, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at 1:29 p.m. at LaPorte Hospital.

He was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Magoffin, Ky., to Dona and Polly (Joseph) Allen, and had lived most of his life in the LaPorte area, coming from Magoffin.

Mr. Allen was self-employed and co-owner and operator of Allen's Gas Station at U.S. 35 and U.S. 6 for 28 years. He was also a school bus driver for Union Township and was a foreman at Kingsbury Ordnance Plant during the Korean War. Currently, he had been a security guard at Roll-Coater, Kingsbury. He was a member of Kingsford American Legion Post 434 and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He loved to fish, work in his garden and build doghouses and enjoyed playing pool in the Senior Club Pool League.

On Sept. 15, 1939, in Magoffin, he married Betty Whitaker, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Faye (John) Johnson of Hobe Sound, Fla.; two sons, Ray (Kathy) of Michigan City and Larry (Loraine) of LaPorte; six grandchildren, Mark and Lori Allen, Paul Risner, Darin and Dennis Mercer and Sherri Colling; seven great-grandchildren; and one half-brother, Henry James of Murray, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randy; one sister, Ethel Rosentreter; and two brothers, Ray and Otis.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Rev. Tim Williams officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Tracy Cemetery, Hamlet.
