Clinton MO - Mrs. Lawrence Schmedding passed away at her home near Germantown, Wednesday, October 20th. She had been in poor health for several years, the last two being confined to her bed. Her husband took her to Kansas City, and to Mayo Bros. several months ago in hopes of making it possible for her to enjoy many more years with her family and loved ones, but the will of the Heavenly father was to call her to the home prepared for all those who love and serve him. The maiden name of the deceased was Hilda Licher and she was born near Montrose, April 28th, 1890. On October 29th, 1912, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Schmedding. To this union five children were born and those who survive her are: Harry, Ruth, Frederica, Hershule and Julian. Besides them she leaves to mourn her death a broken hearted husband, loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Licher, one brother, Edward Licher, and two sisters - Mrs. Robert Cole and Mrs. Pence; besides a host of friends. Weep not dear husband, children, parents and friends for she is out of her suffering, for she suffered as no tongue can tell, but she bore her suffering very patiently. She had all the attention that kind nursing and friends could give, but to no avail; death had called its victim, and on Wednesday morning at 3 a.m., while loved ones and friends stood around the dying bed, the spirit bade farewell to its earthly home and left for its home above. May the Lord comfort the dear ones in their hour of sorrow and prepare them all for a happy reunion in the realms of endless day. She was a kind and dutiful mother, a loving companion and always ready to help those in need. She was known for her kindliness and sweet neighborly manner and always had a smile for those she met. The children will miss this dear, good mother, who was always ready with helpful advice to them, and we know that when someone said "She was the best mother who ever lived," she spoke the thoughts of others. May they be comforted to know that their mother is now with the redeemed and free from sorrow or pain. Funeral services were held at St. Ludger's church at Germantown, Friday morning, by Rev. Ault. She was laid to rest beneath a beautiful mound of flowers in the Germantown cemetery. (Obit from Henry Co website, used with permission.)

A member from Germany, Sandra Licher, has kindly sent the following link to their site re the Licher family - it is very well done, in German: http://www.sandralicher.de/index.php/Auswanderer.html

Sandra also sent this background, starting with Hilda's grandfather, also an ancestor of Sandra's:

"Johann Conrad Licher
- lived in Franklin County, Missouri

He was day laborer (peon?) and a small farmer without own land in a small village in northern Germany. He was born on november 30th, his parents were:
Johann Georg Licher and Anna Maria Elisabeth Brockmeyer.
He had 12 siblings, five of them were from the first wife of his father who died early.

On may 21st in 1836 in Bremen he got onboard of the brig Ulysses to go to Baltimore, Maryland. The captain of the ship was H. Spilcker.
Johann Conrad wasn't accompanied by any wife or children.

During the U.S. Census in 1860 he lived in St. John's Township, Franklin County, Missouri.
His family: Catherine, 7 years old, Peter. 4 years old, Sophia, 1 year old. A wife isn't mentioned, so she might have died earlier.
His neighbors were all from the kingdom Hanover, so he surely was surrounded by old friends from Germany.

Johann Conrads daughter Sophia married John G. Grotehaus, and they had a son: Gerhard Henry William Grotehaus (born 1883).
His son Peter married Amanda Schopp, they had four children: Mary Josephine (born 1886), Hilda Clara (born 1890), Elsie Teresa (born 1894) und Adeline Catherine (born 1897).
Adeline Catherine Licher married Robert Lawrence Cole, they gut seven children.
Peters daughter Hilda married Lawrence B. Schmedding."

Original marker was double with Lawrence, who had no DOD. He remarried and has a double stone with his 2nd wife in Bates Co MO. Hilda's marker has been replaced with just her name engraved on it.
