Declaration of Independence Signer, US Senator. The third Charles Carroll of early colonial American leaders, he was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1776, he was a delegate from Maryland to the Second Continental Congress, and always signed his name, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the name he had given to his estate, so that he would be distinguished from his father and grandfather, both prominent men in colonial Maryland. After signing the Declaration of Independence, he went with his cousin John Carroll, Samuel Chase and Benjamin Franklin to ask Canadians for their help in securing independence for America in the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, their mission failed. In 1777, he was elected to Maryland's first State Senate, where he served until 1801. He also was elected as a Senator from Maryland to the United States Senate, serving from 1789 to 1792. In 1801, he retired from politics, devoting the remainder of his life to business and the running of his extensive plantation at Carrollton, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore. At the time of his death, he was one of the richest men in America. A statue of him represents Maryland in the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)
