Pouline Marie Thomsen married Andrew Enevol Berthelsen on November 21, 1885 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had seven children:

Graveside Rites Set Thursday for Mrs. Berthelsen


Mrs. A.E. Berthelsen, a former resident of Mexia, died in Houston Tuesday morning. She was 99 years old. Funeral services were held at Houston at 2 p.m. Wednesday, and graveside services willbe held at the Forest Glade cemetery Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. The Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of burial arrangements. Mrs. Berthelsen was born at Lokken, Denmark, and came to the United States when she was 20. She moved to the Mexia area in 1910 and lived there for several years. A member of the Lutheran Church, she is survived by two sons, Thomas Berthelsen, of Dallas, and Bert Berthelsen, of Turk Island, and three daughters, Mrs. H.C. McKinney, of Mexia, and Mrs. J.G. Sowell and Mrs. L.C. Lupin of Houston. Also survivng is a brother, Carl Thomsen, of Denmark; 21 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Pauline Berthelsen has 95 direct descendants -- five children, 21 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Berthelsen of 4038 Ella Lee, died Thursday in a Houston hospital after a long illness. She was 99.

From Denmark

A native of Lokken, Denmark, Mrs. Berthelsen came to the United States as a young woman. She lived in Iowa and several small Texas towns before moving to Houston about 38 years ago. Her husband, A.E. Berthelsen, was also a native of Denmark and the couple married in Iowa. Mr. Berthelsen, a blacksmith, wheelwright and farmer, died in 1926. Mrs. Berthelsen often returned to Denmark to visit friends and relatives. Her last visit was just before the start of World War II. Mrs. Berthelsen was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Danish Cooking

In her younger days she enjoyed cooking Danish foods, and her specialties included Danish breads and pastries. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Anna Lupin and Mrs. Julia Sowell, both of Houston, and Mrs. Magdalena McKinney of Mexia, and two sons: Tom Berthelsen of Dallas and Bert Berthelsen of Port Orange, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Hansen of Jacksonville, Fla., and a brother Carl Thomsen of Denmark.
