Obituary from eckersellfuneralhome.com:
Mary Lou Barnes, 76 of Blackfoot, Idaho, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Mary Lou was born Tuesday, 20 November 1945 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Ralph Cleverley Barnes and Pearl Lucille Winans Barnes. She weighed 7 lbs 5 ozs and was 21 ½ inches long. She had four older sisters, making her the fifth child of the family. When she was two years of age she had a brother, Ralph Thomas and two years later another sister, Shirlee. That completed the family making six siblings, seven children in all.
Mary Lou was injured at birth and at 7 years of age was diagnosed with a learning disability and was rated as a four-five-year-old. She would never be able to read or write. But she did attend the Saint Leon Opportunity School for handicapped children, attending for ten years and graduated at eighteen years old. The school had a graduation program, awarding the children a diploma and a corsage. She was really excited, she even got a graduation dress and she kept that dress for years, even when she out grew it. That was something really special for her.
Mary Lou's father passed away in 1978. In 1986 her mother had a stroke and Mary Lou moved into Ashliman Shelton Home in Shelley, her first assisted living home. Since then, she has lived in the following assisted living homes: Riverside Estates, Spring Hills, Ida Care Home, Kimball Residential Home and in the year 2010 she moved into the BMH Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where she was living when she passed away.
Mary Lou enjoyed the association with the other people in the facilities she has lived in. She learned behavioral skills, done volunteer work, went to a Can Do day camp, rode horses and went to dances. She was on a bowling league, she helped plant a garden, learned better communications skills, made crafts, attended a Special Olympics and learned how to cook simple items, plus many more things.
She is survived by her sisters, Joan Field of Rigby, Idaho, Jean Adamson of Ucon, Idaho, and Shirlee Morris of Nephi, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Pearl Barnes, brother, Ralph Thomas Barnes, and sisters, Patricia Mae Kessler and Carol Heiskari.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2022 at Ririe-Shelton Cemetery, 12463 E. 129 N. Rigby, ID 83442.
