Obituary - The Advocate, Rockwell City, Iowa, 29 March 1928

PIONEER OF CALHOUN DIED LAST SATURDAY

E. R. Scroggin, a resident of this community for about forty years, passed away Saturday evening, March 24, at his home on Pleasant Street.

Mr. Scroggin had been in poor health for many months past. In the fall of 1927, he fell on a flight of stairs and broke his hip. Although the fracture healed, it caused him great inconvenience and the injury brought on other ailments which had confined him to his home for most of the winter just past.

For thirty-two years, the family occupied a farm just west of the corporation line. Mr. Scroggin was a capable farmer and a respected citizen, greatly devoted to his family and the best interests of the community.

He was born near Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, on July 29, 1851. Removing to Iowa in 1882, he lived at Lake City for four years. On September 16, 1884, he married Mrs. Olive Johnson of that place and they removed to the farm near Rockwell City in 1886. Several years ago the family came to live in town.

Mr. and Mrs. Scroggin were the parents of six children, five of whom are living. One girl died in infancy. Those who survive their father are Clarence Scroggin of Storm Lake, George Scroggin of Fort Dodge, Charles Scroggin and Glen Scroggin of Rockwell City, and Mrs. Lester Conrad of Rockwell City. His wife and one step-daughter, Mrs. Dennis Bryant of Iuka, Kansas, also survive. Two sisters and five of his brothers are living. They are Mrs. Chas. Palmer of Ocheydan, and Mrs. D. H. Parker of Lake City; Lewis Scroggin of California, and Ben, Charles, and Lee of Lake City, and Oscar of Spencer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Church of Christ with interment at Rose Hill cemetery. Out-of-town attendants were Mr. and Mrs. George Scroggin of Fort Dodge; the D. W. Bryant family of Iuka, Kansas; Clarence Scroggin and family of Storm Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Scroggin, Ben Scroggin, and Mrs. D. H. Parker, Lake City; Mrs. Hazel Peterson of Storm Lake; Leo Murphy of Fonda; and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wisthoff.
