Johann BENDER born 1 June 1873 most likely in Chutor Besrukowa near Bergdorf, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia was the son of Christian BENDER and Magdalena Johanna HOFF.

Johann married Katherina Anna "Kate" GRABAU in 1897 probably in Bergdorf, Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia. This union was blessed with no less than 12 children; Johann, Christian, Kathrina, Karolina, Magdalena, Margaret, Elizabeth, Emil, Anna Marie, Sophia, Lydia F and Edwin.

Johann at the age of 27 with his wife Katherina and their son Johann immigrated to America via Antwerp, Belgium on the 29th of September 1900 aboard the SS "Westernland" and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on the 11th of October 1900. Their final destination was recorded as Menno, South Dakota to join Johann's uncle, Simon HOFF.

As the Johann BENDER family was making their journey northwesterly to Stark County, North Dakota their daughter, Katherina was born on the 6th of November 1900, in Eureka, McPherson County, South Dakota. This event unquestionably confirms that this was indeed the same Johann Bender family that filed their 1st Papers of Intent in becoming citizens of the USA on the 19th of November 1900, in adjoining McIntosh County, North Dakota.

In 1919 the Johann BENDER family moved to the Victor, San Joaquin County area of California, located just beyond the eastern outskirts of Lodi, California.
