He married Mary Elizabeth Elkins in Locust Grove Ga (who was his second cousin, their grandmothers being sisters.Mary Elizabeth was the grandaughter of Erwin Elkins and Elizabeth Garrett) and moved to Greer County OK in 1890. He was the first pioneer in Reed, Greer, OK. He was postmaster, and a farmer. He donated land for the Missionary Baptist church there. He was the father of Parks Matterson, William Lemuel, George Spencer,Mary Cornelia Ponder, Joseph Pinkney, Althea Lorena, my great-grandfather James Arthur Smith, Henry Jackson Smith and Crowley Alphus Smith. After his wife died in 1899 he married Hattie Brandon Gunn, who gave him 4 more children, Logan Paul, Reid Eugene, George Diego and Hattie May. The portrait of GW and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Elkins, is hanging in the Old Greer County Museum in Mangum Ok as first pioneers (Reed room).
