William attended Harvard College for a year or two, but graduated from Yale in 1766. He studied medicine with his father, and practiced for more than 60 years. He was active during the yellow fever epidemic of 1797, and though contracting the disease himself, he was able to survive it.
He and Sarah had at least five children, one of whom, William Corlis Bowen, was also a physician, but died before the age of 30.
