Chafin, the son of John Preston and Margaret Ellen Glasscock's was born December 19, 1824 in Marion County, Kentucky. In 1975 he moved to Pilot Point, Denton County, Texas with his parents. He came to Oldham County in 1892, in his twenties with his parents in a covered wagon from Pilot Point. He acquired a large number of acres of farm and ranch land in the county, being one of Oldham Counties original land title holders. Everyone thought him to be a confirmed bachelor but in 1910 he married Stella Hawkins. She came from Iowa and was working in Vega as a nurse. For many years they owned the Adrian Mercantile (originally the Giles Hotel built by J. P. Collier) which became a combination hotel, café and general store under the Glasscock ownership that began in 1910 and ended in 1946. Their homestead was located near the Landergin Elevator between Vega and Adrian. Chafin was one of the first people in the county to own a Model-T automobile which he used to transport groceries from Amarillo to Adrian. It is said that he usually drove down the middle of the road only using second gear and everyone knew to get out of his way when they saw him coming. He helped to promote the building of the first highways in Oldham County. He also served on the Adrian School Board. He was considered to be a fair and honest businessman, often extending credit to his customers during the depression when he knew they couldn't pay. He also took cattle, grain or whatever they had in exchange for his merchandise. Chafin and Stella retired in the early 1940's and moved to Amarillo. Not long after that Chafin died and she moved back to Oldham County, preferring living in Oldham County to city life as well as returning to the help that had been provided to her and Chafin by William Chafin "Bill" Leslie (their nephew). She passed away at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, May 10, 1961.
