Ray Henry Zumwalt passed away on July 30, 2007, after a hard-fought battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 56 years old.

Ray was born on August 19, 1950, to M.E. "Estel" and Betty (Phillips) Zumwalt of Bolivar, Mo. He graduated from Bolivar High School in May of 1968 and went on to complete two years of credit at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) before transferring to the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Pharmacy, from which he graduated in August of 1978.

Ray and his family moved to Stockton, Mo., in 1979 and opened Zumwalt Pharmacy on the square in June of that same year. In October of 1999, Ray opened his second business, Sonic of Stockton. Both businesses are in continuous operation. During his time in the Stockton community, Ray was a chairman or member of many organizations including Lion's Club, Stockton Area Chamber of Commerce, FORB (Friends of RB Road), Ducks Unlimited, a charter member of PBA (Pharmacy Buying Association), NCPA (National Community Pharmacist Association), MPA (Missouri Pharmacy Association), as well as a sponsor and coach for Stockton School District organizations and little league baseball. Ray was an avid outdoorsman, sportsman, and hunter. He enjoyed running his bird dogs in pursuit of quail, pheasant, duck, and was also an active turkey hunter. He was a season ticket holder of the Springfield Cardinals, a longtime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals, as well as an enthusiastic fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Ray's other lifelong love was spending time with his horses. Ray and his family are longtime members of the MFTHBA (Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association). Owning Fox Trotters since boyhood, Ray spent countless hours riding, showing, and breeding them in a long partnership with his dad. He was also a lifelong Democrat and tireless campaigner for Democratic politicians and causes. At the age of 14, Ray was baptized at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bolivar, Mo. In 1980 he became a member and one-time deacon of the Arcola Christian Church in Arcola, Mo.

On October 15, 1970, he married Jane Ann Decker who survives him along with three children: John Zumwalt of Willard, Mo., Justin Zumwalt of Grandview, Mo., and Sara Zumwalt of Springfield, Mo; two grandchildren, Samuel Zumwalt (of John and Kashia Zumwalt) Willard, Mo., and Zackary Zumwalt (of Justin and Ivy Zumwalt) Grandview, Mo. He is also survived by parents, M.E. "Estel" and Betty Zumwalt of Bolivar, Mo.; and a brother, Brad Zumwalt and wife, Sandy, of Springfield, Mo.; along with countless other relatives and friends who love him still and miss him dearly.

Services will be held in the Stockton Assembly of God Church on Thursday, August 2, 2007, at 10 a.m. with burial following in Stockton Cemetery in Stockton, Mo. The visitation will be held in Brumback Funeral Home this evening, August 1, 2007, at 7 p.m. in Stockton, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to FORB (Friends of RB) at Mid-Missouri Bank or the Ray Zumwalt Memorial Scholarship Fund at Liberty Bank both in Stockton, Mo.
