A well-to-do planter, Mr. Manning was born in Dallas county, Alabama, in the month of April, 1834, the third in a family of twelve children born to James Clark and Elizabeth B. (Hall) Manning

James began the battle of life for himself at the age of twenty-one and after following the calling of planting until 1872 he embarked in the drug business in Farmerville, a calling he followed until 1880, when he sold out his stock of drugs to once more engage in planting. He is the owner of 1,000 acres of excellent farming land, embracing several plantations in Union Parish, but also owns 1,200 acres of land in Jackson parish and residence property in Farmerville. He has been married three times, first in 1859 to Miss Margaret Graham, by whom he became the father of three daughters, and three years following her death, which occurred in 1870, he wedded Mrs. S. E. Sims, by whom he became the father of a son and a daughter. She died in 1876, and in 1879 Miss M. A. Bruton became his third wife and has borne him a son and daughter. All Mr. Manning's children are deceased except two children by the last wife and one by the first. The names of those living are: Belle, wife of Governor W. W. Heard; Jessie and James B. C. Mr. and Mrs. Manning are members of the church, he of the Baptist and she of the Methodist Episcopal church south, and socially he belongs to the K. of P. and the K. of H. Mr. Manning is a gentleman who has won the confidence and respect of all who know him, for aside from being a useful citizen he is a kind and accommodating neighbor and is a liberal contributor to all enterprises deserving his patronage. Although he has always manifested considerable interest in politics, he has never been an office seeker in the broad sense of the term, notwithstanding the fact that since 1884 he has ably and efficiently filled the position of Parish Treasurer.

He served in Co. E 12th LA Infantry CSA.
