Dale was born to Charles and Anna (Schneekloth) Mohr. He grew up on a farm northeast of Bennington. He attended school and graduated from Bennington in 1949. After high school Dale began working at the local Coop. He then entered the US Navy in 1951.
Dale married Ila Mae Kruse in 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bennington, Nebraska. They had two children, Van Dale and Sue Renee.
Dale and Ila lived in California and then Omaha before finally settling in Bennington to raise their family.
After leaving active duty Dale began working for OPPD as a lineman and continued there until 1968. In 1969 Dale and Ila opened Dale’s Gambles Hardware Store in downtown Bennington. In 1977 they built a new building “on the top of the hill”. A few years later they changed franchises and became Dale’s True Value. While running the hardware store Dale also enjoyed appliance repair, cutting down trees, and basic electrical jobs. After selling the store in 1990 Dale became a full-time electrician. Dale also served in the Navy Reserves for over 30 years.
Dale served on the Bennington Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Bennington Village Board. Dale was a long time, active member of the Bennington American Legion Post #266. He was a member of the VFW and area Korean War Vet Association. He was a current member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
In his spare time, he also enjoyed camping, fishing, gambling, and “piddle-farting-around ” in the shop. He and Ila enjoyed traveling as well. For many years they religiously attended reunions of the Tin Can Sailor and USS Bausell Associations; traveling to cities all over the United States.
Dale enjoyed his grand and great grandchildren immensely. He attended many, many football, baseball, softball, basketball games, dance recitals, and birthday parties. They always brought a huge smile to his face.
