John William "Bill"Fick, 76

April 21, 1896 ~ March 17, 1973

from obituary published in the March 22, 1973 Enterprise, Blair, Nebraska

JOHN W. FICK DIED AT HIS HOME SATURDAY MORNING

John William was born April 21, 1896, at Blair, Nebraska. He attended school in Blair; married a Blair girl and lived here all of his life.

He married a Blair girl, Ane Christine Poulsen. There were no children.

As a young man Bill gained quite a reputation as a baseball player and he was regarded as one of the best pitchers in the old Elkhorn Valley League. Adding to his prowess and color was the fact that he was a left handed pitcher which added to the problems of the batters who came up against him.

He worked for a time for the American Express agency when that method of package handling was at its peak. He was also a toll-keeper on the Blair bridge for a number of years.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge.

He was retired, having worked many years for the Blair Utilities Department.

John William Fick (Bill), a life-long resident of Blair, Nebraska, died at his home at 1419 Colfax Street, Saturday forenoon, March 17th. He had been in failing health for many months.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, C.R. (Rudy) Fick, of 1403 Front Street in Blair, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held at the Campbell Mortuary Tuesday afternoon, March 20th with the Rev. Robert Albers conducting the service. Burial was made in the Orum cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased.
