Joseph W. Moore was the youngest child of William and Margaret Moore, buried near Joseph in High Bridge. Joseph was a constable in Rockbridge for many years as was his brother Nathan G. Moore.
Both brothers were members of the Virginia State Militia and Joseph rose to the rank of Colonel. He resigned this position in 1852, but continued to be known as Col. Joseph W. Moore. He worked on the North (Maury) River Canal and then rented the Washington Hotel in Lexington. From the Gazette, Lexington, Va April 6, 1854, "On Wednesday night (March 29th) about ten o'clock, an affray took place in the street in fromt of the Washington Hotel between Mr. Wm. J. Winn and Col. Jos. W. Moore. It seems that on Wednesday afternoon... a misunderstanding had sprung up between the parties in regard to a settlement....
Winn came to the Hotel and called Moore out, stating that he wanted to see him privately. Moore went out... and closed the door after him. After some conversation between them which could not be distinguished by those in the bar room, high words were heard, insulting epithets passed...and ... Moore was stabbed with a knife. Immediately on receiviing the wound he turned, exclaiming, 'that's enough,' walked into the hotel and sat down, remarking he was stabbed.... and died in a few minutes.... A man has been stricken down in all the prime and vigor of his life, a wife widowed and five helpless children orphaned...."
His wife was Mary Agnes Gibson and his children John Poague Moore, Hannah Rachel Moore, William Gibson Moore, Cornelia Ida Moore and Marietta Barclay Moore.
