Harry “Stewart” Corns, 81, of North Platte, passed away Jan. 4, 2018.

“Stew” was born on Dec. 11, 1936, in Cambridge to Erman Edward and Virgie (Scott) Corns. The family moved to McCook in his early childhood, and he graduated from McCook High School in 1954.

He married Dorothy Mae Lennemann on June 16, 1956. After graduation, he studied for one year at McCook Junior College and was shop forman for Reynolds Oldsmobile/Cadillac in McCook. On June 16, 1958, he was sworn in as an officer in the Nebraska State Patrol. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1960 and after basic training, he served at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Nuremberg, Germany.

After being discharged from the Army, he returned to the State Patrol, where he served for 37 years in Scottsbluff, Kimball, Chadron, Grand Island and North Platte. In 1976, he graduated from a general course of instruction at the FBI National Academy United States Department of Justice in Quantico, Virginia. He retired from the State Patrol at the rank of captain in 1995. After his retirement, Stewart worked as a private security officer for the Social Security offices in North Platte.

He was an avid reader and spent many happy hours of his retirement picking out books at the public library. He also spent time socializing with friends over morning coffee and following Nebraska Cornhusker football.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two children, Linda (Corns) Pfenning and Greg Corns; two granddaughters, Rebecca Pfenning and Alaina Pfenning-Butterworth; niece, Karen Hunter; cousins, Sandy Shaerer and Gene Stark; and many friends and former colleagues.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Josh Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
