Mrs. Ulrika Nelson was born in Östergötland, Sweden, August 7, 1830 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Norling, in Denver, Colorado, May 29, 1904, at the ripe old age of 93 years, 9 months, 22 days.

She was united in marriage with John Nelson in Sweden on May 20, 1851. This union was blessed with seven children of whom four have gone before. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Nelson came to America and for some time lived in New York and attended services at the Bethel ship, the cradle of Swedish Methodism in America. Here she was converted through the ministry of Rev. Olof Hedstrom. From New York they moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where they lived for a number of years. From Keokuk they moved to the Swede Bend community and in 1865 they united with the Swedish Methodist church there, of which deceased was a faithful member until her death. She was active in the work as long as her health and strength permitted.

About twenty years ago they retired from their farm southwest of Stratford and moved here where they purchased a residence. They lived here for many years and were a highly respected old couple. Mr. Nelson passed away Aug. 7, 1916 and since then his aged wife has been tenderly cared for by her children. Last fall, Mrs. Nelson went to Denver to live with her daughter where she could have the care of loved ones.

She is survived by three children: Mrs. Hilda Malander of Boone; Mrs. John Norling of Denver, Colo., and Oliver Nelson of Stratford. Six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends also mourn her departure.

Deceased was one of the early pioneer settlers of this community who came here during the frontier days and who, with her husband, toiled and suffered the manyfold privations of that early period which has made this state the balwark of liberty, freedom and wealth. She was a woman of true Christian courage, a loving wife and mother who for four score and thirteen years had helped minister to the happiness of her family and neighbors and she has gone to a well earned rest from earthly labors.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home and at the M.E. church here conducted by Rev. A.W. Carlson, assisted by Rev. Carl Hammer. The remains were laid to rest in the Swede Bend Cemetery.
