LOCAL MAN MARKS 94TH BIRTHDAY
By Chris Colladay

Open house Thursday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Tucker, 425 South Walnut, South Hutchinson, marked the 94th birthday of Mrs. Tucker's father, William D. Roberson.

Close friends and relatives were invited, and about 50 persons dropped in to see him. Visitors included all of his children except one son, Carl, who lives in Superior, Arizona, and many of his 28 grandchildren.

There are 10 of his 12 sons and daughters living. All but Carl live in the Hutchinson vicinity. They are: John, Buhler; Schuyler, Ivan, Thomas, Mmes. Carl Evans, Clarence Emery, Fred Evans, Roy Emery, all of Hutchinson; and Mrs. Tucker. There are 39 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Roberson was born in a log cabin in Linn County, Kansas, near Mound City, where he grew to manhood. His parents came to Kansas from Jefferson County in Illinois to homestead.

In June of 1901, after his marriage, Mr. Roberson brought his bride to central Kansas in a covered wagon. They settled in Reno County, on a farm near Castleton, and lived in that vicinity most of their married life. Mrs. Roberson died shortly after they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in June of 1963.

Although he would not smile while having his picture taken, and said, "I have seen too much of life to smile," after the picture was taken and the camera had been put away, Mr. Roberson smiled and said, "I was married 62 years, and I saved all my smiles for my wife."

Mr. Roberson does not smoke or drink, and eats only two meals a day. He reads some, although cataracts have impaired his vision to some extent, and was quite interested in the recent election. He is active and alert and enjoys taking automobile rides and being able to wait on himself.

He has a record player, and prefers church and old-time music. For recreation, he likes radio or television, and playing checkers or chess with friends.
