John Lindsey Dow was born in 1825, a son of John Lorenzo Dow and Harty Ellis. He married Mehitabel Drummond, daughter of Benjamin and Eunice Berry Drummond on September 23, 1841 in Coles County (the part now Cumberland County), Illinois. John was a Civil War Veteran, serving as a Sergeant and 1st Lieutenant in Company L of the 5th Illinois US Calvary.
John and Mehitabel were the parents of nine children: Benjamin F., Abigail (McPherson), Francis Marion, Eunice, Harty, George Washington, Henry Daniel, Josiah, and Barbara Ann (Jackson). Eunice, Harty, George, and Josiah all died in infancy.
John's wife Mehitabel died in 1895 and John remarried the following year to Mary R. Camp Devine. She was born in 1840 in Wyoming County, NY and married John A. D. Rodgers in 1859, but divorced him in 1868. She later married John W. Wells in 1891. He died in 1894, and she married John Lindsey Dow in 1896. After his death in 1911, she lived in the Soldiers and Sailors' Home in Wilmington, Illinois until her death in 1922.
