George Alexander Allison Sr., 82

Chester -- George Alexander Allison, Sr., 82, life long resident of Chester and formerly of Columbia Drive, died yesterday morning at 4 a.m. Oct. 24, 2005, at The Holander House Nursing Home, Salem, Ohio, following a long illness. George was born in Chester, W.Va, June 30, 1923, son of the late John Thomas and Hildagard Agnes Goppert Allison of Chester. George is a descendant of the early pioneer Allisons of Hancock County, W.Va., settling here in the late 1700's. George graduated from Chester High School in 1943. He entered the service April 22, 1943, serving his country in The United States Navy in World War II, fighting in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. George last served on the USS Haynsworth. He was a life member and also a past commander of VFW Post 6450, 1966-68, and member of the American Legion Post 121. George was a Chester Volunteer Fireman, 1957 - 1972, and was active with the Chester Fire Department through 2001. He enjoyed outdoor activities and was an devoted pet owner, with much fondness for his dogs. He was Methodist by faith. George operated, and later came to own, Allison's Golden Dawn Foods. Allison's Golden Dawn became a popular neighborhood store for the upper end of Chester in 1953, with George's father, John T. Allison as owner. "J.T". Allison and George ran the business until J.T.'s death in 1960. George and his mother, Hilda, kept the business running until 1975. Besides his parents, also preceding George in death was his first wife, Isabel F. Cunningham Allison in 1969 and his second wife, Kathryn Pearl Slabaugh Allison in 2002; a brother, Walter Max Allison in 1996, and a great-grandson Justin Kyle Andrews in 1990. George is survived by one son, George A. Allison, Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Chester, and two daughters, Susan V. Andrews and her companion, Charles Hutton, of Newell; Kathryn L. Tarr and her husband, Richard, of Cheswick, Pa., two stepsons, Robert L. Desmond of Las Vegas, Nev.; Thomas R. Desmond and his wife, Mary, of Chippewa, Pa., one stepdaughter, Diane Wells and her husband, Tom, of Chester; two sisters, Mrs. Alma M. Caughey Culp of Campbell, Calif., and Kate E. Barker and her husband, Robert, of Calcutta. Also surviving George are his 14 grandchildren, whom he dearly loved and spoiled; Derek and Vince Allison, Jeff Andrews and Jody (Andrews) Barnette, Maura, Mark, Chris Heim and Ryder Tarr; Morgan, Josh and Alex Desmond; Brad and Sandi Stafford and Joey Caughey. Funeral Services will be held at the Arner Funeral Chapel on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Hookstown, Pa., where the Tri-State Burial Group will accord military honors. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m.
