Phillip H. Chastain enlisted with Co. B, 23rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA on Aug. 31, 1861 as a private. He was captured and paroled at Warrenton, VA on September 29, 1862. He then transferred to Co. E, 65th Regiment, Georgia Infantry on Feb. 14, 1863. He was appointed 5th Sergeant on March 1, 1863. Thr Roll for Oct. 31, 1863 shows that he was transferred Aug. 6, 1863. Following the Civil War, Phillip Chastain married Hannah Matilda Ensley Patterson on 22 Oct 1865 in Fannin, GA, where the couple lived until his death. The application for his headstone (dated 1933) cites his death as 15 Jan 1897.
