Ben F. Chastain, 89 years old, of Lone Star District boasting his sharpshooting would take him to war: proved it by hitting a sparrowhawk about 100 yards away. Confederate vet.

Death of Ben Chastain

Benjamin F. Chastain, a pioneer resident of Lone Star District, near Auburn, died at Callahan, Siskiyou county, last Sunday. He walked through a cellar door in a grocery store there and in the fall broke his neck.

Deceased left Placer county a few months ago with his son Henry and family. Several other children and his wife also live in that locality, most of them at Gazelle.

Mr. Chastain was a well known character, for he had lived here a half century. He fought in the Civil War, on the side of the South. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and was a man of rugged, strong character. Burial took place in Callahan.
