James Alonzo Matthews was a Civil War Veteran.

A portion of the obituary in the Edwardsville Intelligencer on April 21, 1908 states: "Mr. Matthews came to this part of the country in wartime. He was associated for some time with John S. Wheeler in buying horses and mules for the government." James A. Matthews is in fact a Civil War Veteran, was a resident of Greencastle (now Alhambra, Illinois)enlisting on August 12, 1862 as a Private in Company G of the 117th Illinois Infantry Regiment. He served until April 24, 1863 when he was discharged because of disability.

On May 26, 1869 James A. Matthews and Louisa Josephine Pearce, daughter of William Wriley and Barbara Allen (Vincent) Pearce, were married in Madison County, Illinois

They were the parents of a son, James Alonzo Matthews, Jr. who was born on November 18, 1869. Louisa passed away just 4 days later on November 22, 1869.

A later obituary carried in the Edwardsville Intelligencer on May 1, 1908 states in the Alhambra News: "The body of James Alonzo Matthews, Sr., a former resident of this place, who died in St. Louis, was brought here for burial Tuesday. The interment took place in the Vincent cemetery. Rev. E. R. Randle of the Maple Avenue Methodist church, St. Louis, a friend for years of the decedent, had charge of the funeral. Mr. Matthews leaves to mourn his death one son, James Alonzo Matthews, Jr. of St. Louis. He was born in Toronto, Canada, and had attained the age of 67 years. His wife, who died in 1868, was the daughter of the late W. W. Pearce of this place."
