James Alonzo Matthews, Jr. was the son of James Alonzo and Louisa Josephine (Pearce) Matthews. His mother's family cared for him after his mother died four days after his birth.

He married Caroline Emma (Carrie) Oswald of Alhambra, Illinois about 1899.

James and Carrie are shown in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records. He was employed by the railroad during those years.
