Johnny's Story
Johnny Claude Gates, age 57, passed away April 13, 2016. Johnny was born December 24, 1958 to Claude and Rose Ann Gates in Muskogee. On November 17, 1978 he married Gracie Johnson and they were married for 27 years. To their marriage they had two children, Johnny Michael and Jennifer. On July 15, 2006 Johnny married Patty Vann of Stilwell, Oklahoma and was married to her until his passing. Even though he always said he was finished raising kids, Johnny took on the responsibility of raising Sayleigh Vann. He was a carpenter by trade. Johnny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and anything else that kept him outdoors. He had many hobbies, too numerous to list. Johnny liked to spend time on projects with John Michael and getting into trouble with his twin grandsons and whomever
they snuck to his house. You would often find him in the woods or on the lake with Patty and the boys, or one of his many family and friends he enjoyed spending time with. Although you wouldn't have actually been able to reach him because he would leave his phone at home, stay gone for hours, and you just had to wait for him to show up. Johnny was one of the most interesting people and lived to make people laugh or upset them with his childish antics. If Johnny upset you in any way along his journey that was most likely his intention and he usually accomplished what he set out to do. Youth hunting was very important to Johnny and in lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a small donation to oklahomayouthhunting.org, or if you ever hunted with Johnny the family asks your consideration for a second donation to the Oklahoma Wildlife Department as retribution. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Rose Ann; and 1 sister Misty Johnson. Johnny leaves behind to cherish his memories, wife Patty Gates; son John Michael & wife Christina of Ft. Gibson; step son, Brian Vann & wife Felicia of Stilwell; daughter Jennifer Taylor & husband Joshua of Vian; 2 step daughters, Amanda Harrington & husband Clayton of Bunch, OK, and Sayleigh Vann of Stilwell; 7 brothers, Tom Gates & wife Nancy of Haltom City, TX, Jim Gates & wife Donna, Ron Gates & wife Teresa, Mark Gates & wife Dana, Tracy Gates, Forrest Gates & wife Tonya, William Gates & wife Jill, all of Gore; 4 sisters, Nancy Teafatiller & husband Calvin of Webbers Falls, Barbara James & husband John, Terry Box & husband Glen, Angela Fults & husband Cliff, all of Gore; 9 grandchildren, Jaykob, Christian, Elijah, Austin, Lastyn, Alayna, Avann, Chase, Talan; his life long sidekicks, John Chandler and Gary Garrison; numerous nieces; nephews; and friends. Graveside Services will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday April 19, 2016 at Gates Family Cemetery in Gore under the direction of Hibbs Funeral Home.
