Dr. Gudgel apprenticed with Dr. McGowan at Oakland City in Gibson County before entering medical school. He first studied at Louisville, Kentucky and later entered Miami Medical College at Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduating from the latter in 1874, he returned to Gibson County and began a practice at Hazleton.

He married Cynthia Ann Baldwin and together they were the parents of five children. Their son Harry B. Gudgel also became a physician and practiced at Hazleton.

Evansville Courier and Press, Evansville, IN, Sunday, Oct. 6, 1901, pg 2:

"Fell Dead While Talking To His Partner --- Dr. John F. Gudgel, Known in This city, Dies at Hazleton.

"Hazleton, Ind., Oct. 5. --- Dr. John F. Gudgel, age 51 years, died at 8:30 o'clock this morning. He has been a sufferer from heart disease for about two years.

"He was in his office, talking to his partner, Dr. Arthur, when he fell backwards and died in a few minutes.

"Dr. Gudgel has been a leading physician here for twenty-five years and was a prominent member of his profession. He was a member of the M. E. church, a past master of masons and a member of the A.O.U.W. societies. He was the local surgeon for the E. & T. H. railroad and secretary of the board of health.

"The deceased leaves a wife, five children, a father, Andrew Gudgel of Oakland City, three brothers, Levin W., attorney, Princeton, Ind., J. A., physician, Cynthiana, Ind., and W. H., attorney in Washington."
