"Wm H. Gudgel Passes Away --- Former Evansville Attorney Dies at His Home in South Bend, Wash. Heat Disease The Cause.

"W. H. Gudgel, formerly a prominent lawyer of Evansville, twice prosecuting attorney of the Vanderburg-Posey circuit and at one time a Republican nominee for congress from the First Indiana district, died at South Bend, Wash., Sunday night.

"The news of his death was received by L. W. Gudgel, of Princeton, at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon. The telegram read as follows: 'South Bend, Wash., Dec. 11. L. W. Gudgel, Princeton, Ind. W. H. Gudgel died from heart failure last night. Wire instructions. C. E. Huston'

"Mr. Gudgel of Princeton said Monday afternoon that he and his brother, Dr. J. E. Gudgel, of
Cynthiana, were not decided what to do about the burial. An announcement will be made later regarding it.

"William H. Gudgel left Evansville about six years ago, going to Washington, where he took up the practice of law, and became a leading factor in the politics and civic advancement of his adopted home.

"He was a son of Andrew Gudgel, a well known Gibson county citizen, who now resides at Hazelton. William was born in 1848. Shortly after his birth the family moved to a point near Oakland City, and William worked on a farm and went to school. In the latter part of the civil war he enlisted in the 143d Indiana and saw service in the South.

"After his return from the army he went to Asbury University, now De Pauw and took a baccalaureate course there, getting his degree in 1873. Thence he came to Evansville and began to read law under Judge Asa Igleheart. He was admitted to the bar in this county and established himself here in law practice.

"He was elected prosecuting attorney in 1878 and 1880. In 1882 he was the Republican nominee for congress against John J. Kleiner, but was defeated.

"Mr. Gudgel married Miss Elizabeth Potts. Four of his children, William H. Gudgel and Daniel Gudgel, and a married daughter, Mrs. J. E. Davis, are living in Evansville. Mrs. Gudgel, the widow, also lives in this city. [Note: Only three children listed, the 4th is Gilbert G.]

"He leaves, besides his children, the before mentioned brothers, his father, and a sister, Mrs. Nora Muck, of Owensville, Ind."
