Thomas was born to Jacob Boughner and Susan Collins in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada in 1855. He came to Michigan as a boy with his Mother's brother, Thomas Collins, and his family, and made a living with an ax and his ox cutting and hauling logs and clearing land in St. Clair County while attending school. Tom married Jane Eva Evans daughter of George Evans and Louisa Shoals on 23 July 1875. He farmed for a living.
