Margaret Kennedy was the daughter of Richard Kennedy and Maria Wright, both of England, according to her death certificate. The 1910 census shows her year of immigration as 1857, although this seems unlikely. A passenger manifest shows that she arrived on the Juventa, at the port of Philadelphia, in 1854, along with her husband James Hodgson; his parents, John and Elizabeth Hodgson; and members of the related Pickering family.

Margaret Kennedy Hodgson's death certificate indicates two different years of birth, 1833 and 1836. The year 1833 conforms to an age of 78 at death and matches her headstone. Additional support for an 1833 year of birth is found in the 1910 census, which shows her as age 76 two years before her death. However, the inked "1836" looks like a later correction, for reasons unknown.
