James G Hodgson was born at "Grain," according to the 1851 England census, possibly Grains o' th' Beck. His Pennsylvania death certificate confirms that his parents were John Hodgson and Elizabeth Gardner, and that all three were born in County Durham, England.

(A baptismal index record shows that a James Hodgson, son of John Hodgson and Elizabeth ___, was christened at Auckland Saint Andrew, County Durham, England, on 3 February 1828. Another indexed record has identical information with a christening date of 15 February 1835. Examination of the parish register might confirm whether one of these records refers to James Gardiner Hodgson.)

James Hodgson married in England, probably by 1853, Margaret Kennedy, daughter of Richard Kennedy and Maria Wright. They had at least two children, Elizabeth and Edward, before emigrating on board the barque Juventa in 1854. The ship docked in Philadelphia, and soon afterward the family settled in Monongahela, where James and Margaret remained until their deaths.
