Dorothy M. Sten, 81, of Oskar Bay, died on Friday, July 18, 2014, at PortagePointe.
She was born in Liminga, Mich. On December 25, 1932, a daughter of the late Victor and Helen (Kauppila) Koskela. She attended both the Liminga and Redridge Schools, graduating from Houghton High School in 1950.
Dorothy was employed for 23 years in the laundry department at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
On January 27, 1951, she was married to Robert E. Sten.
Dorothy was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran faith. She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, baking, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid fan of baseball, hockey and football. She and her husband, Bob, had the opportunity to make four trips to Alaska and enjoyed every one of their 54 trips to Isle Royale.
Dorothy loved her family and spending time with them brought her great joy. She especially loved preparing birthday and holiday meals.
Surviving are her husband, Robert “Bob” of Oskar Bay; two sons, Allan (Beverly Esquible) Sten of Freda, and Jim (Carole) Sten of Redridge; two daughters, Carol (Bill) Vater of Freda, and Mary Jo (Andy) Lukehart of South Range; nine grandchildren, John (Bridget) Durocher of Laurium, Billy (Fawn) Vater of the N. Superior Rd., Tammie (Leon) Fraki of the N. Superior Rd., Jeffrey (Krystel) Vater of Lake Linden, Paul Sten of Redridge, Lauren Sten of Appleton, Wisc., Brooke, Allison and Callie Sten of Redridge; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Evan Durocher; three sisters, Ruth (James) Johnson of the Houghton Canal, Betty Ann (Jack) Kolehmainen of the Houghton Canal, Bonnie (David) Isola of Atlantic Mine; three brothers, Robert (Joyce) Koskela of Clarkston, Mich., William (Gail) Koskela of Lake Linden, Terry Koskela of Liminga; a daughter-in-law, Donna Sten of the Houghton Canal; two brothers-in-law, Howard (Eunice) Sten of Oskar Bay, and Eldon (MaryAnn) Sten of Painesdale; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, Dorothy was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis Sten; a grandson, Brett Dennis Sten; a sister, Darlene Heikka; two brothers, Roy and Dennis Koskela; father and mother-in-law, Eino and Lempi Sten; a son-in-law, James Durocher; a daughter-in-law, Paula Sten; and a sister-in-law, Winifred Sten.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Oskar Cemetery.
