Robert “Bob” E. Sten, 89, of Oskar Bay, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 26. 2019.
He was born January 18, 1930, in Freda, a son of the late Eino and Lempi (Anttila) Sten, and was a 1947 graduate of the Houghton High School.
On January 27, 1951, Bob married the former Dorothy Koskela. Dorothy passed away July 18, 2014.
Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1951-53 during the Korean Conflict.
Bob held many jobs throughout his life. He was a rock crusher at the Painesdale Mine, worked in a sawmill, logged, was as a lineman, drove fuel truck and did carpenter work, retiring from the George Hocking Construction Company in 1991. Trapping was his favorite pastime. He also enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, deer hunting/camp (for 76 years) and going to the casino. He and his wife, Dorothy, enjoyed several trips to Las Vegas, Alaska and Isle Royale. He loved spending time with his brothers, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He always looked forward to "Girls Night" which was a once a week visit/supper with family. He was a generous gift giver. Entertaining with his jokes and stories was a highlight in his life. A big steak and a baked potato were his favorite meal. He was a fan of Stanton baseball and the Green Bay Packers. Bob will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
Besides his parents and wife, Bob was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis; a grandson, Brett; a sister, Winifred Sten; sons-in-law, James Durocher and Willie Garnell; and a daughter-in-law, Paula Sten. He is survived by his children, Allan (Beverly Esquible) of Freda, Carol Garnell of Hancock, Jim (Carole) of Redridge, and Mary Jo (Andy) Lukehart of South Range; grandchildren, John (Bridget) Durocher, Billy (Fawn) Vater, Tammie (Leon) Fraki, Jeff (Krystel) Vater, Paul Sten, Lauren (Kyle) Eggert, Brooke (Jim) Larsen, Allison Sten and Callie Sten; three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Evan and Ella; two brothers, Howard (Eunice) Sten of Oskar Bay and Eldon (Mary Ann) of Painesdale; a daughter-in-law, Donna Sten; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Johnson and Betty (Jack) Kolehmainen, both of the Houghton Canal area, Bonnie (David) Isola of Atlantic Mine; two brothers-in-law, William (Gail) Koskela of Lake Linden and Terry Koskela of Liminga; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Oskar Cemetery with Pastor Jesse Aho to officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Copper Country Veteran’s Association. A luncheon will follow at the Stanton Township Fire Hall. Memorials may be made in Bob's name to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, The Omega House, Zion Lutheran Church or Camp Lahti Retreat Center. Arrangements are being handled by the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home of Hancock, Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
