Iva Boettcher Barthel, 93, of Burwell died Wednesday, Oct 17,2001 at Valley County Hospital, Ord.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct 22,2001 at Burwell Assembly of God Church. The Reverends Howard Rice, Don Pelto, Jim Wilkins officiated. Graveside services were in Chambers Cemetery.
Iva was born June 29,1908 at Tonawanda, Nebr, near Atkinson to Fred and Marie Hahn Boettcher. She spent her early years on the ranch her parents homesteaded.
She attended rural school to which they drove a topless buggy. She graduated from the eighth grade with honors. On June 24,1929 she married Carl Edgar Barthel at O'Neill. They were blessed with seven children. The couple made their first home on the ranch in Holt County that Carl homesteaded. In 1939 they moved to a Garfield County ranch. Carl passed away in 1963 and Iva moved into Burwell.
While living in Burwell Iva did babysitting and had worked for many years as a receptionist for the Fleming Funeral Home. In 1996 Iva moved to an apartment attached to her daughters ranch house where she would watch the beautiful Nebraska sunsets and was in awe of the many autumn hues from her west window.
Fishing and bird watching were two of Iva's loves. She enjoyed gardening, flowering, tatting, crocheting, embroidering, working on her stamp collection and puzzles. After moving to Burwell she became an avid bowler.
In the early years she attended Blake Assembly of God Church near their ranch.
At that church in 1940 Iva accepted the Lord as her Savior and He was her strength and helper ever since. She later attended the Cedar Creek Mission north of Burwell. Iva was a member of Burwell Assembly of God Church and had also attended the Assembly of God Church at Ord.
Due to failing health, in late 1999 she went to the Valley County nursing Home.
On Sept 13th she suffered a stroke which left her partially paralyzed. On Oct 9 she moved to Valley County hospital.
She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Keller of Sandy, Oregon, Shirley (Mrs Lloyd) Lytle of Burwell, Virginia (Mrs Paul) Phillips of Kent, Wash, three sons, Stanley and wife Carlene of Blackfoot, Idaho, Eugene and wife Anna of Peoria, Ariz, and Rodney and wife Kathy of Collinsville, Tex; 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren.
