Alma was born July 29, 1912 to John and Helena Backhus in rural Tampa. She attended country school until the 8th grade. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Tampa where she was baptized and confirmed. After Alma finished school, she worked as a house keeper and nanny for new mothers. Alma met Ernest Meyer through writing letters to service men for her church youth group. Ernest and Alma married on April 15, 1945. To this marriage were two children Dennis and Marlene.
Alma was very active in her church, always looking forward to meeting with her Ladies Aid group. She enjoyed sewing and gardening. Alma loved getting to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured her time spent with family. She was an avid card player and enjoyed the beauty of sunflowers.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ernest, brothers Irwin, Emil, Adolph, Herb, Ed, sisters Ella Heidemann, Wilma Nunn, son-in-law Donald Brunner and grandson Paul Brunner.
She is survived by her son Dennis Meyer of Tampa, Kansas, daughter Marlene Brunner of Fremont, Nebraska, grandchildren Dawn (Jeff) Larson of Yankton, South Dakota, Lori (David) Brunner-Buck of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Tami (Mike) Bolden of Fremont, Nebraska, Joel (Crissy) Brunner of Mayer Minnesota, Mark Brunner of Fremont, Nebraska, sister Frieda Bentz, brothers, Harry, John, Wilbert, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials to the Rev. Donald Brunner Scholarship Fund Concordia Seminary Ft. Wayne, Indiana or St. John's Lutheran Church in Tampa.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 13, 2015 from 12:00P.M.until the time of service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Tampa, Kansas.
Funeral Service will be at 2:00P.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Clarke Davis officiating. Burial will take place at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery."
