Edwin "Ed" Backhus, 81, lifelong resident of the Tampa area, died April 19, 2008, at Herington Municipal Hospital.
Born Sept. 9, 1926, north of Tampa, he was the son of John and Helena (Ottensmeier) Backhus.
On June 18, 1967, he married Elaine Platz at Herington.
He worked for the former Tip Top ice cream plant at Hillsboro, then was employed as a grain miller for more than 20 years with Tampa co-op until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Tampa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Erwin, Emil, and Adolph; and a sister, Wilma Nunn.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Herington; son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Tisha Backhus of Herington; four brothers, Herbert Backhus and Wilbert Backhus, both of Tampa, Harry Backhus of Leavenworth, and John Backhus of Enterprise; three sisters, Alma Meyer and Frieda Bentz, both of Tampa, and Ella Heidemann of Decatur, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. John Lutheran Church, Tampa, with the Rev. Clark Davis officiating.
Burial was in the North Tampa Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established with the church.
