John was the son of John Martin Raines (1829 – 1882) and Ellafair Anne Braddy Raines (1830-1887) of Washington County, GA just north of Wrightsville.

John was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Walker Raines (Dec 18, 1861 - Jan 11, 1930) whom he married on Dec 25, 1881 in Wrightsville, GA. Mary Elizabeth Walker was a grandaughter of Jethro Arline from his daughter Martha ARLINE.
