Hays -- Leon N. Gabel, 71, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. He was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Hays to Nicholas and Katie (Dreiling) Gabel.

He was a 1950 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy. He was a retired farmer and stockman.

He married Mary Ann Haas on Aug. 6, 1951, in Hays.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1325 and the Bishop Cunningham 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He served on the board of Farmers Credit Union and Good Hope School.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; his mother, Hays; a son, Anthony "Tony" Gabel, Hutchinson; five daughters, Carol Legleiter, Hays, Jackie Rothenberger, Nixa, Mo., Amy Dreiling, Wichita, Nicki Hudson, West, Texas, and Kim Schmidtberger, Victoria; two brothers, Wayne and Gary, both of Hays; three sisters, Marlene Brull and Mary Sauer, both of Hays, and Delores Binder, Fort Collins, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Gabel Jensen, an infant brother, Tony, a granddaughter, Monique Rothenberger, and a son-in-law, Bob Hudson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Earl Befort officiating; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a parish vigil at 6:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. at the mortuary. The Bishop Cunningham 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard starting at 5:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
