Catherine "Katie" Gabel, 97, Hays, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at St. John's New Horizons.

She was born Feb. 23, 1909, on a farm south of Victoria to John and Margaret (Vonfeldt) Dreiling. She attended school in Victoria.

She married Nicholas "Nick" Gabel on May 28, 1928, at Munjor. He died May 25, 1977.

She was head cook at Hays Protestant Hospital, was a farm wife, and was a part-time cook at St. Joseph Military Academy for 20 years. She also cooked for many Volga German weddings and St. Joseph Church bazaars. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society Christian Mothers, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary, Daughters of Isabella and Sisters of St. Agnes Associates. She was also a volunteer for ARC Thrift Shop for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Gabel, Hays, and Gerald "Gary" Gabel and his wife, Ellie, Hays; three daughters, Delores Binder, Fort Collins, Colo., Marlene Brull and her husband, Charles, Hays, and Mary Gabel, Hays; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Leon and Anthony; a daughter-in-law, Marie Gabel; a son-in-law, Floyd Binder; a granddaughter, Kathleen Gabel Jensen; and two great-granddaughters, Monique Rothenberger and Kristen Gabel. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Frank Dreiling; and three sisters, Marian Geist, Philomena Rohleder and Josephine Unrein.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church; and from noon to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A combined Altar Society Christian Mothers and Hays Medical Center Auxiliary rosary will be at 4 p.m. Friday and a Sisters of St. Agnes Associated rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, both at the funeral home. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday followed by a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. John's New Horizons and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
