Fitzgerald, Born On River Steamboat in 1857, Dies.

George Fitzgerald, aged 59 years, who was born on a Missouri river steam boat, en route from St. Joseph to Omaha in 1857, died Mar. 1, at his home, 2610 Spencer street. He had been ill early since Saturday, of grip and complications.

Mr. Fitzgerald’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Fitzgerald, settled on a farm north of Florence, where for years the family has been widely known. George Fitzgerald left the farm a dozen years ago and had since been employed by the Paxton-Vierling Co. He worked Saturday until forced to go home by his illness.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of the Calhoun lodge, W. O. W.

A wife, three sons and three daughters, a father, three brothers and three sisters, survive. The children are George, Joseph, Margaret, Marie and Julia of Omaha and John of Sioux City.

The funeral services were held from the Sacred Heart church in Omaha, on Saturday morning, Mar. 4. Father Collins of Omaha celebrated requiem high mass and Father O’Driscoll of Blair preached the sermon and had charge of the services at the grave. Interment was made in Holy Sepulchre cemetery. This was said to be one of the largest funeral processions in Omaha for years. It was estimated that there were about 70 carriages that followed in line.

The parents of George Fitzgerald were born in Ireland and the whole family of sturdy pioneer stock are proud of the old far away home. They do not belong to the same church that this writer does or vote the same ticket but for 45 years we have had no warmer friends in Washington county, than these Garryowen people.
