GASTONIA ~ Richard Henry Rankin of Belmont, formerly of Columbia, S.C., was a son to Henry Hand Rankin and Helen Bell Rankin. Richard attended Belmont Public Schools and graduated from NC State University in 1970 with a degree in Civil Engineering. While at State, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He enjoyed a long career in nuclear power plant construction, and also in general construction. He was employed at the time of his death by Chicago Bridge & Iron in their Charlotte office. He was a member of the NC Society of Professional Engineers.
In Belmont, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. He also was an avid sportsman who enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, and boating. His hobbies also included golf, gardening, cooking, and genealogy, especially of his Scots-Irish ancestors of early Gaston County. He loved life, family, and his many friends.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
