She was educated in the Mooresville public schools, and graduated from Women's College of the University of North Carolina with the Class of 1937. After graduation, she worked briefly in the Medical Records Dept. of Lowrance Hospital in Mooresville. She married Henry Hand Rankin from Gastonia in 1938, and they moved to Belmont, NC, where she was a homemaker, fifth grade teacher at New Hope Elementary School, and community leader for 67 years. During that time, she was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Belmont, serving as President of the United Methodist Women for 3 terms. She was also a member of Tuesday Afternoon Book Club, Town & Country Garden Club, and several bridge clubs. She was also an active member of Colonial Dames XVII Century, and the Order of First Families of NC.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Henry Hand Rankin, and by her son, Richard Henry Rankin. Also predeceasing her were her sisters, Mary Parks Weathers, Lilla Bell Winstead, Louise Bell Moffitt, Eleanor Bell Alexander, and a brother, Dr. Ralph Monroe Bell.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise Rankin Kelly, and her husband, James H. Kelly, Jr., of Winston-Salem, NC. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Carol Stowe Rankin of Belmont and sister-in-law Mary Ann Bell of Waxhaw, and four grandchildren: James Howard Kelly III of Charlottesville, VA, Elizabeth Kelly Parker, and husband, Jeremy Neely Parker, of Larchmont, NY, Meredith Anderson Rankin of Charleston, SC, and Andrew Richard Rankin and wife, Cody Rankin, of Simpsonville, SC. Helen is also survived by three great-grandsons and seven nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem, NC, where Helen resided for four years, and also the staff of Covenant Village in Gastonia, where she resided the past five years. They also wish to thank Viviana Urrea and Laura Presley for their services, as well as Hospice of Gaston County.
A service of Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 807 South Point Rd., Belmont, NC at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016. A reception will immediately follow the service in Carpenter Hall. A private service of committal will be held for the family in Greenwood Cemetery.
