Obituary - Edward Cowles Stevenson, 52, well-known Patchogue restaurant proprietor, was found dead Saturday night in his garage on Potter street, an apparent suicide. News of Mr. Stevenson's shocked many Patchoguers who had known him as a cheerful and friendly man who often presided over the counter of H. & S restaurant on Main Street, near four corners, which he had operated for 28 years with Budd Hildreth of Blue Point. His body was found hanging from a beam in the garage by his wife at about 11 p.m. Mrs. Stevenson told police that she had been home reading for some time before she discovered that her husband was not asleep in his room. He had been suffering from insomnia, a heart condition from diabetes and had trouble sleeping for the past two weeks, according to Coroner P. Jerome Laviano, who issued a verdict of suicide after a brief inquest of the scene. The body was removed to Robertaccio Funeral home, where private funeral services were held Tuesday. Mr. Stevenson was born in Philadelphia and had lived in Patchogue for 36 years. He was a member of the Southside Lodge, F. & A. M., Patchogue, and a member of the Fellowcraft Club, Patchogue. Stevenson, of Patchogue; one son, Robert, and a daughter, Collette, both of Patchogue; two sisters, Mrs. Edmund Denison and Mrs. Arthur Weeks of Patchogue, and a brother, Valentine of Patchogue.
