Edwin Herman Birr was born in Sterling Twp, Blue Earth, MN to Herman A Birr and Hulda Clara Meyer. His siblings were Laura, Oscar and William. After his father's early death in 1920, they kept the family and farm together and Edwin took over about 1940. He married Gladys Marie Ericksen on June 17, 1943 and there were no children from this union. They farmed together and raised pigs until his death. His wife continued on the farm until about 2005.
