Lem Tarter, 76, died Friday at the Somerset City Hospital after an illness of two weeks. He was a farmer at Nancy.

The son of the late Sam and Naomi Trimble Tarter, he was born December 2, 1885. He was married February 1, 1915 to Mattie Daulton and five children were born to this union.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Mollie Wallace of Somerset, Mrs. Ruie Burton, Cisco, Illinois, and Mrs. Anita Phillips, Blakeslee, Ohio; and one son, Clifford Tarter of Somerset. One daughter, Opal Tarter, preceded him in death.

Mr. Tarter became a member of the White Oak Baptist Church at the age of 24. He later became a member of the Okalona Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member until death. He was a member of Lodge 238, International Order of Odd Fellows at Somerset.

Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Lola Combest, Largo, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Sunday with the Rev. Howard Mounce and the Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery.

Farris-Morris-Hislope Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
